How To Pick a Wedding Cake: Top Tips

  1. Wait it out. It's easier to pick the design/style of the cake once other elements, like the date and/or location of the wedding, wedding colors and theme, are determined. You wouldn't want to have a 15-tier wedding cake at a beach-side ceremony, right?
  2. Find a cake designer you admire. If you're looking for a cake that's more modern and less frilly flowers and Greek columns, then be sure to find someone whose skills match your sense of style. Ask family and friends for some recommendations or look online to get an idea of the bakery's wedding cake portfolio before booking an appointment. Be sure to check the bakery's reputation too. Look at sites like Yelp, the Knot or local websites and magazines to get a grasp of other brides experiences.
  3. Plus One. Yes, free cake samples sounds like a great way to bond with your bridesmaids or soon-to-be in-laws, but it also welcomes confusion and chaos. Typically, the more people you invite the harder it is to get an overall consensus on cake flavors and designs. And, the most important opinion out of all of the hubbub is yours. Grab the groom, your mom or a best friend but no more than two other people tops.
  4. Think outside the cake. Why stop at just a wedding cake? Set up a dessert table and give your guests a smorgasbord of options. This popular dessert trend features a variety of sweet treats including cupcakes, cookies, candy, pies, macaroons, doughnuts, cake pops, fresh fruits and more all set up in a gorgeous display. Bonus: midnight snacks!
